Hakim Bellamy, inaugural Poet Laureate of Albuquerque, NM (2012-2014), worked with students from ¡YouthWorks! in Santa Fe to develop poetry pieces where students reflect on their personal relationship with immigration. This is a follow up to the show “Between Two Worlds” where students produced oral history radio segments with folk artists from the Gallery Of Conscience at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

N’MPower participant, Antonio Martinez, interviews Spanish Colonial artist John Gallegos, in a community engagement project between the Museum of International Folk Art’s Gallery of Conscience exhibit, “Let’s Talk About This: Folk Artists Respond to HIV/AIDS Awareness” and Youth Media Project.  John’s intent behind his retablo, “Imaginar”, which is featured in the exhibit, is to convey a message of hope for HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.  Through the telling of this story, Antonio reveals his own experience of confronting his sexuality within his family and his faith.
